Sept. 30 a movie called "The Prize Winner of Defiance, OH" comes out. It is based on a critically acclaimed book (four and a half stars on Amazon) of the same named that came out a few years ago. It's a true story about a mother of ten who raised her children by entering contests and prizes put on by various companies and stores. One of the children was one of my little league baseball coaches growing up (his son was on our team and a grade school friend) so it's pretty cool to get to see it on the big screen.
When I was in high school they released another movie that was set in Defiance ("House Arrest.") It wasn't all that impressive and you didn't miss anything if you missed it. This movie, however seems to be shooting for the big time. Just by looking at the names involved you can tell that (it stars Woody Harrelson, Julianne Moore and is produced by Robert Zemeckis) . I'm really excited to see it and hope some of you get the chance to check it out. I'm sure it's cool for all of us Defiance folks to see the "Defiance things" in it (you can see Arps milk in the trailer, and I know Kissner's is in there, and probably Maags), but check out the trailer and you'll probably see that the story line is worthy of a great film.

I have to add my recommendation for this movie as well based on the book. I picked the book up a couple of years ago based on the title alone (If I hadn't known someone from Defiance, I probably would have passed right over it at the bookstore) and I'm glad I did. It's a great story about the struggle to take care of a family and offers interesting insight into "typical" family roles. I only hope they have done justice to the book.
P.S. I never thought to ask you if you had connections to anyone in the book.
